HISTORY
James L. Goodwin (1881-1967) hailed from one of Hartford's most prominent families. One of America's first professional foresters, Goodwin began acquiring land in Hampton, CT in 1913. Soon, "Pine Acres Farm" grew to nearly 2,000 acres. For 50 years, he practiced pioneering and state of the art forest management. In 1964, Goodwin gifted the entire property to the people and state of Connecticut. The Conservation Center houses a self-guided photographic tour of the history of the James L. Goodwin State Forest and Conservation Education Center, please come inside to learn about the history of the Goodwin Forest and to say hello to our staff! We would love to answer your questions. NATURE CENTER Educational programs are typically held in the Nature Center but visitors are always welcome to visit. The Center is filled with mounts, skeletons and nests that you might find while walking in the forest. You will find a guide that explains different ecosystems of our local wildlife. You will also discover information about wood products, tree-ring dating (aka Dendrology), basic parts of a tree and wood samples for tree identification. |
